Photo: Sunflower mine structure

It is amazing to me that this tall wooden mine structure is still standing after being abandoned 50 years ago, particularly because the wood is unprotected by paint or preservative. It must have been built to be sturdy to handle the heaving mining operations.

Of course I would not want to stay under the heavy timbers of such an old, damaged structure for very long.

This week we are showing photos of Tanzania on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

This would be an even more dramatic scene on a dark and stormy night, rather than a bright and sunny afternoon.

It is amazing that there is so much left there.

Amazing that it is still standing given the extreme temps and possibly snow

A fascinating place. They were building very well, in olden times! It was meant to last.
