Jumping cholla are called jumping cholla because walking next to them can result in their spines seeming to jump off the cactus and hook onto one's clothing or skin.
The ends of the needles have little fishhook tips so that they grab ahold of anything that comes in contact with them, and the spines will break off and stay affixed to the person or animal.
I guess with these aggressive and hostile characteristics, one might wonder why I have planted jumping cholla in our yard. My husband wonders that each time he has to separate a cholla spine from his clothing or skin.

I have had too many close encounters with jumping cholla cacti.
