This is a Mexican fence post cactus in our backyard. It is the time of year that they sprout buds and flowers. This group of Mexican fence post cacti do particularly well, and they are unusually plump, and covered in buds that crowd their spine.
The buds fall and sprout new cacti. The birds and bees like them as well.
