Barrel cactus

This is a barrel cactus from our yard. They are about the size of a basketball and accumulate water to last between the rain.

This barrel cactus has sprouted several flowers in the top, one of which is in bloom.

Today is Sunday, so we have new photos posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  This week we are showing photos of Costa Rica, which of course my husband Dave shows everyday on his Costa Rica Daily Photo site.

Ever think about Mother Nature sitting down and saying "I think I'll create a huge plant that absorbs water and has monstrous spikes?" What a sense of humor . . .

Following up on Jack's comment, Mother Nature probably knew that without the spikes a plant storing water in the desert would be eaten by animals.

The blooms of barrel cactus are very interesting and they bloom at all different times.
