Photo: Sun Devil Stadium Across Tempe Town Lake

This is a view of Arizona State University's Sun Devil Stadium across Tempe Town Lake.  When I went to ASU, the Sun Devil football games were the main sporting even in town, as that was before we had the Arizona Cardinals or the Diamondbacks.

People used to park their cars for football games in the gravel riverbed, which is now beneath Tempe Town Lake.  On rare occasions, about once per year, the Salt River Project would release water from the upstream dams and water would flow down the river.  If a football game was occurring after one of the water releases, they would make an announcement during the football games warning people to move their cars, otherwise their cars may be floating down the river by the end of the game.

They now release water to keep Tempe Town Lake full, year around.

Dave and Stuart rode their bicycles from Scottsdale down Indian Bend Wash to Tempe Town Lake.  This view shows one of the boat ramps in the lake, looking west towards the office buildings on the Tempe side of  the Mill Avenue Bridge.

Tempe Town Lake is formed by a dam and the release of water into the Salt River.  There is an issue because the original dam was made of an inflated rubber material, and it did not last as long as expected due to the brutal Arizona sun.  The City of Tempe is trying to decide whether to replace the short-term replacement dam with another inflatable rubber dam or whether to construct a more durable dam.

Here is a photo of my alma mater, Arizona State University, and its Activity Center.  Sun Devil Stadium is on the top left and you can see Tempe Town Lake in the background.

ASU has gone solar!  It is a major developer and use of solar energy resources.  There are solar panels covering the roof of the Activity Center, and more solar panels providing shade for parking lots in the background of the photo.

What a cool photo. I did not get the opportunity to take this photo but kudos to the photographer.

Here is a photo looking from Scottsdale to Tempe.

This is the Tempe Butte and these are office buildings and condos in front of the Butte and there is actually water below.

The water is running in the Salt River but it is blocked with an inflatable dam, otherwise no water would remain.
