This is another view of the structure that held the mercury gas cooling tanks that I showed yesterday. You will notice the same tree with the unusual white bark in both photos.
The Sunflower mine is located near the site of an 1868 cavalry water station for soldiers stationed at nearby Camp Reno beginning in 1868. The cavalry abandoned the area shortly thereafter. The Apaches attached Camp Reno in 1870 but were surprised to find it empty. They burned it so that the cavalry would not return.
Yes, folks, this is the former wild West. And just think, when the cavalry was in this area in 1868 it was just two decades since this entire area had been territory of Mexico and Spain for centuries.
