Photo: Biosphere Industrial Interior

Parts of the Biosphere interior are rather industrial in design and appearance.  It is not all gardens.  It takes industrial infrastructure to generate and recycle the water use and air circulation to keep a group of researchers alive and self-sufficient during years of living within an enclosure, without any food or supplies from the outside world.

Sharon made a good comment yesterday, pointing out that many of the materials used to construct the Biosphere were selected because they would be easier to transport into space and construct in a future biosphere on a planet.  But there is a lot of concrete in the industrial infrastructure under the Biosphere that would be quite a burden to construct after transporting the supplies to a distant planet.

This week we are showing another set of underwater photos from our recent trip to the Galapagos Islands posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

The Biosphere looks difficult to construct on earth. Constructing it on a distant planet would present enormous challenges for current capabilities.

And where do the workers live while construction is going on? Lots of questions.

I'll bet there were lots of bugs to work out with this project.
