Photo: Plein Air Painting at the Desert Botanical Garden

This is not an appeal for sympathy, but it is a good thing that Dave took this photo before I started my pastel.  You can imagine how difficult it would be to try to paint the dense canopy of the trees, with the desert underbrush, filtered by an explosion of dappled light.

I don't think Monet's lilly pads or wheat fields, or the facade of the Rouen Cathedral, presented such a challenge.

I learned a lot from this lesson.  I especially learned that the prerequisites to success are:  an idea, creativity, observation, time, materials, and, most importantly, talent.

Our teacher, Judith Spitz, is both an excellent teacher and a very talented artist, as is evident from her website.

This week we have photos of the Wadi Rum Desert of Jordan posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

I agree that this was a challenging scene to paint. That's why I picked an easier scene, with several large cacti to paint.

I think I'd much rather photograph this scene than try to paint it.

I am impressed that you are taking painting lessons. I don't think I could go through that awkward period of being terrible before starting to do decent work. Good luck with it. And, enjoy it.
