Photo: Hiker Rescued from Camelback Mountain

This photo shows the helicopter after the hiker was rescued and lifted into the helicopter, which is about to emerge across the ridge of Camelback Mountain.

The newspaper reported that the hiker was a 53-year old man who broke his ankle.

I received an email yesterday from the hiker's wife.  She said that he is an experienced hiker, but his foot got wedged in the rocks and he slid about two feet.  He broke his ankle in several places and needed surgery, a metal plate and screws in his ankle.
She said that  the mountain rescue team was amazing.  The sprinted up the trail with a stretcher and had intended to carry her husband out, but he is 6 feet 5 inches tall, so they called in the helicopter.

I will tell more of her story tomorrow, but there was even more news.  A second injured hiker rescue occurred a few moments later, as I will show during the next few days.

This week we are showing photos of Papua New Guinea on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  We returned about one week ago.  It was a wonderful mix of native cultures, South Pacific scenery, a total solar eclipse, a volcano erupting at night, and colorful coral reefs.

Very interesting that you were contacted by and received information from the wife of the person rescued. She must have been Googling for news stories of the rescue and found your post.

It was good to hear that the man is okay and that the rescue team was so diligent and helpful.

I guess the moral is "Hikers Beware" ... sounds like it could be a dangerous sport!.

I am glad that the rescue worked out well, but if that was me being rescued and dangling from the line, I would probably had a heart attack.
