Photo: Guadalupe Chapel Interior

This is another view of Guadalupe Chapel interior.  I assume from the poles attached to this object that this is carried by parishioners on their shoulders and paraded around the square in front of the church during festivals.  That is a common feature of religious festivals in Latin America, and the tghe tradition continues in Guadalupe.

The Guadalupe community south of Scottsdale was established more than 100 years ago by Yaqui Native Americans who fled repression under the regime of Mexican President Porfirio Diaz.  Diaz ruled Mexico for far too long -- 35 years in the late 1800's.  I prefer to recall the reign of the other President of Mexico who came from Oaxaca, Benito Juaraz.

Benito Juarez is one of the truly great figures of Mexican history, and the only President of Mexico of
Native American ancestry.  He was greatly respected around the world as well.  A bit of trivia is that Benito Mussolini's parents named their son after Juarez.  Benito is also the name of a cat in a popular cartoon in Argentina, but I digress.

Today is Sunday, so we have new photos posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  This week we are showing photos highlighted by the wildlife of Tanzania, Africa.  I think you will like them.

Colorful church decorations, and an explanation of a bit of colorful Mexican history.
