Photo: Cholla cactus flower

There are often flowers hiding in a thicket of cactus thorns.  This is a flower in a cholla cactus that we have in a large pot on our patio.

The thorns of cholla cacti are particularly bothersome.  They seem to "jump" and grab hold of you and the branch will come off and cling to your clothing.  Sometimes they are called jumping chollas.

We are showing photos of the bottom of the Grand Canyon on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site this week.

I am glad that this cholla is in a pot. I am less likely to walk too close to it.

When I first moved to Arizona so many years ago, this is the cactus people warned me about all the time. And, rightly so.

Fascinating! I will look for those during our next trip to AZ.
