Photo: Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Guadalupe, Arizona

I mentioned several days ago that the main Pascua Yaqui community in the area is in Guadalupe, a few miles south of Scottsdale.  This photo shows the main church in Guadalupe, appropriately dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico.

The Pascua Yaquis fled repression in Mexico in 1900 and settled in this area.  A 1 square mile town site was laid out for them by 1914.  The community today retains its character of being both Pascua Yaqui Native American and Latino.

The street names are in Spanish.  There is a vibrant Mexican Market.  Obviously this church is Hispanic.   The community celebrates many festivals that preserve their culture.

This week we are featuring photos of Golden Bangkok, Thailand on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  Its elaborate temples are architectural treasures.

This looks like classic Spanish colonial mission architecture.

Beautiful looking church. The Mexican culture is so strong in Arizona and adds so much to the state.

So you didn't see the signs posted in front of this church that photography is not allowed? Taking pictures is an insult to their cultural beliefs.....way to go white man.
