Photo: Great egret

The lakes in Indian Bend Wash and McCormick Ranch contain not only ducks and geese, but egrets ad herons. This looks like a bird that I would expect to see on my husband's Costa Rica Daily Photo blog.

My late father-in-law used to love to watch the herons outside his family room windows, which overlooked a lake where he and my late mother-in-law lived in Leisure World in Mesa, Arizona, about 15 miles east of Scottsdale. (When they passed away and we were no longer responsible to take care of them, we moved from Mesa to Scottsdale/Paradise Valley about 10 years ago).

Today is Sunday, so we have new photos posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site. This week we return to the stark landscape of the Atacama Desert in the Andes of northern Chile. It provides quite a contrast to the Arizona desert.

This does not look like a scene one would expect to see in the desert.

He is probably intent on his dinner. So focused.

This is a great close up. Whenever I try to get a picture of our resident Great Blue Heron, it will fly away before I can get close enough to get a nice shot like yours.

They are amazing to observe.

I used to think that these were unusual birds, but in the past ten years I have seen them in just about every state I have been. They are still stately and fascinating birds.

Beautiful bird! The Dublin zoo bought 2 pairs of them 12 or 15 years ago. They are now 125 nesting couples in and around the zoo
