Here is a photo of some new growth on prickly pear in my front yard.These little upstart cacti look like punk teen kids going out with their hair sticking out all over.
There is a large red hibiscus flower in the background.

A happy prickly pear ready to enjoy the new cool air outside, mostly at night.
That is really interesting. I thought prickly pear are ready to be harvested in the fall. I've seen some that look like they are ready to picked already.

Whoops, I missed that....too early for me yet. I see that it is new pads growing, not the fruit! sorry!

I never thought of it, but your description of these new pads as looking like a teenager's spiked hair is perfect.
