Photo: Swirling Cactus Buds

As you can see in this photo, these cactus buds are almost ready to open and bloom.

I like the swirliness and texture of these buds.

They almost look like a type of food or dessert.

These cactus buds probably are a type of food, which is probably why evolution has resulted in the thorns growing right up the buds to protect them from people or animals picking or eating them.

Love this about cacti, full of texture and color. Desert is a fascinating ecosystem. I am learning more and more about it each day. What a role these green prickly plants play!
