Spring Training Baseball

Scottsdale and the Valley of the Sun is the best location in the country for Spring Training Baseball.  There are fourteen of the Major League baseball teams train in Arizona, forming what is Called the Cactus League.  Baseball games are played in February and March of each year. People come from all over the country to enjoy the festive, relaxed atmosphere of the games and the unsurpassed warm sunny weather.  Check out the action in the first photo.

Arizona has been gaining baseball teams that have relocated from the older site of Spring Training in Florida, called the Grapefruit Circuit.  The advantages for Arizona are that almost all of the fourteen teams an games are located in the Phoenix Metro area called the Valley of the Sun.   In Florida, the games are spread hundreds of miles apart.  Also, the weather in Arizona is better because Arizona has less rain than Florida.

Arizona is an ideal place for baseball fans because on a typical day in the Spring, fans have a choice of six to seven Major League Baseball Spring Training games to attend.  As the second photo shows, what could be more pleasant than watching a game while laying on a blanket spread on the lawn under the nice sunshine.  And, in some cases, while thinking of your friends and family who are living in the snow and cold in the North.

Scottsdale Stadium is home to the San Francisco Giants.  Tickets and information can be obtained by clicking here.

j'avoue que j'ai du mal à suivre un match de baseball en entier, heureusement on a des résumés sur une chaine du câble en France, et ça j'aime bien.
I confess that I find it difficult to follow a match of baseball completely, happily they have summaries on a chaine of the cable in France, and this I like well.

I'm sorry to be with Olivier about baseball, but I keep trying...
The post is very interesting for the logistic and climatic remarks about the Spring Training.

When I was working that temporary assignment in Chicago, I would fly home on weekends and during Feburary and March, the plane would be full of Chicago fans flying to AZ for a game. They were all decked out in their Cubs gear. One man I'd see often wore a full Cubs baseball uniform.

I'm sooooo jealous you have so many choices of teams/games to watch. Are the ticket prices cheaper than regular season games? In Boston, ticket prices are absolutely outrageous and you almost need to take out a second mortgage to bring a family of four to a game. I would assume a Spring Training game to be more like a minor league game and have a more festive atmosphere.

Where could the weather be better? Perfect for a day in the great out doors.

I sympathize with the comments above from European readers of this blog regarding the difficulty of foreigners understanding baseball. It is probably like Americans trying to understand cricket.

For Clueless in Boston, yes, ticket prices are more reasonable than major league games during the season. The atmosphere is more festive and the players are more accessible to fans for autographs before and after the games.

(Dave: Or like Europeans trying to understand cricket... ;)

Back to the post of today: Ah, so that's where spring is! Do allow it to slip over here for the weekend will you? Tired of snow now.

Take me out to the ballgame! Nice shot of one of my favorites Derrick Lee. Hope he got a hit or maybe a home run.

Very American. I don't know much about the sport, but I can understand why it's so popular.

only once did a professional baseball team come to visit the islands and I made sure to get a ticket - but it was in the middle of the day and boy was it hot - I was thinkin it would have been nice to go to the beach!
