Photo: Carrot Top Cactus

Here is a photo of the sun shining through the cactus spines.

You can see how the spines turn an orangish red with the light hitting them just right.

    The difference in color from the spikes on the sides and the spikes catching the sunlight on top is both subtle and dramatic.
