Well, one reason is to be able to drive on old dirt and gravel roads in the high desert outside of Phoenix/Scottsdale.<br /><div><br /></div><div>This is a photo that Stuart took on a trail east of the Superstition mountains, which are about 40 miles (64 km) east of Scottsdale. </div><div><br /></div><div>This photo shows that with just a little gain in elevation, the terrain turns a lot greener than the low desert.</div><div><br /></div><div>In the days ahead I will show some more photos that Stuart took during his road trip. Here is another of the vehicles in his group of 20 drivers on this trail that was chosen for its opportunities to teach what a Jeep can and cannot do. This Jeep looks like it has scraped rocks a few times.<br /><div><br /></div><div>It took the 20 vehicles 8 hours to complete the trail. Stuart asked us to guess how far we thought the group traveled. As you can see from today's and yesterday's photos, it is pretty slow going for each of the 20 Jeeps to creep through such difficult terrain.</div><div><br /></div><div>The answer is that the group travelled one-half mile (.8 km) in their 8 hours. You can see the distinctive shape of Camelback Mountain in the distance. <br /><div><br /></div><div>Scottsdale is located primarily over the ridge of the McDowell Mountains, which is the ridge closer than Camelback in this photo. Phoenix is located on the other side of Camelback.</div><div><br /></div><div>Although there is haze in this photo because it is pointing in the direction of the sun, this view is placed in perspective by the realization that Camelback is probably about 50 miles (80 km) away. Stuart said that he could even see the White Tank and Estrella Mountains on the west side of the Valley of the Sun, which are about 80 miles from Four Peaks.<br /><div><br /></div><div>Although Stuart has a point-and-shoot camera, he got to good photos and I appreciate his willingness to allow me to use them. He is always happy to share, especially if Dave or I need computer assistance. Roosevelt Dam is the oldest federal Bureau of Reclamation project in the country, with President Theodore Roosevelt traveling here in 1911 to dedicate the dam upon completion.<br /><div><br /></div><div>Roosevelt Lake is the largest of the Salt River lakes that store water supply for the Phoenix metropolitan area. At the time it was built, it created the largest artificial lake in the world. The lake inundates 10 miles (16 km) of the Salt River. Every year or so they will release water from the lake when it is at capacity, and water will flow in the Salt River like it did in the 1800's when Phoenix was founded.</div><div><br /></div><div>Several weeks ago I showed some photos of a few of the canals in Scottsdale. Yes, there is a dusting of snow. The effects of a 1996 fire are still visible, as the high desert vegetation has not reforested the area fully.<br /><div><br /></div><div>Northern Arizona has large Ponderosa pine forests. At this lower elevation and higher temperatures, juniper is common.</div><div><br /></div><div>My husband's son, Stuart, took this photo near the end of his Jeep drive up Four Peaks. The giant fountain that gives Fountain Hills its name is visible from about 10 miles away. <div><br /></div><div>The fountain was installed in an artificial lake in 1970 by Robert McCulloch, one year before he bought the London Bridge and moved it, piece to Lake Havasu, Arizona. The fountain operates every hour on the hour.</div><div><br /></div><div>When it was installed, it was the highest fountain in the world, although it is now the 4th highest. It can reach of 560 ft (170 m), about the same height as the Washington Monument. It usually shoots water 300 ft (91 m) high, as usually they fire up just two of the fountain's three 600-horsepower engines. The fountain shoots 7,000 gallons (26,000 liters) of water per hour.</div><div><br /></div><div>Fountain Hills is a suburb, just over a ridge from Scottsdale. There are prickly pear cacti in the foreground. <div><br /></div><div>In March, this scene will likely be exploding with the color of wildflowers.</div><div><br /></div><div>The resorts in Scottsdale have desert drive experiences that are popular with tourists. In addition to being an award-winning architect, David Dodge is a talented composer. The buffet that I showed yesterday was excellent, as were the table settings.<div><br /></div><div>In Arizona we are lucky to be able to enjoy outdoor settings for dinner most of the year.</div><div><br /></div><div>The series of concerts and dinners in private homes is an imaginative outreach effort by the Symphony to draw people and donors into support for the Symphony in creative ways, rather than limiting the Symphony to performances in Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix.</div><div><br /></div><div>Ticket sales for concerts provide only about half of the cost of a symphony orchestra. The rest must be achieved through donations at events such as these. Here is the part of the arrangement of tables on the patio for dinner. The lights of the Valley are visible in the distance, as this house is in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains on the northeast border of Scottsdale.<div><br /></div><div>The house is adjacent to Taliesen West, the winter residence and architectural school of Frank Lloyd Wright. This is the view that attracted Frank Lloyd Wright to Arizona, along with the weather.</div><div><br /></div><div>The home was designed by and is the residence of a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright, award winning architect David Dodge. This is a typical, clear desert sky.<div><br /></div><div>I have a confession to make. My husband took this photo. I have been out of town on lots of trips lately, mostly for business, so Dave went out and took a few photos for me. </div><div><br /></div><div>However, the story behind the photo is more interesting than the photo. Dave remained and took some more photos as it was getting dark. When he finished, he looked down to get his glasses from his shirt collar, as he can't see through the cameral view finder with his glasses. His glasses were gone. </div><div><br /></div><div>Dave then had to look for his glasses, in the dark, without his glasses. He crawled around on the shore of the lake on his hands and knees feeling for his glasses, where hundreds of geese walk around and leave behind, well, you know. </div><div><br /></div><div>Dave and my mother went back at sunrise the next morning and my mother's dog found the glasses. They were new glasses that cost $600, so Dave was quite appreciative. To me, it looks more like Florida, not Arizona.<div><br /></div><div>Former Arizona Governor Bruce Babbitt, who later ran for President and was Secretary of the Interior under President Clinton, caused Arizona to enact pioneering laws in the early to 1980's prohibit developers from using groundwater for decorative lakes and ponds. </div><div><br /></div><div>McCormick Ranch was a 4,200 acre horse ranch that was developed by Kaiser-Aetna into a master-planned community in the 1970's, with lots of hiking and biking trails lacing through the beautifully landscaped neighborhoods. We can go from the office to the airport in about 10 minutes, which is about the time it takes to get from the parking lot to the terminal in many airports. </div><div><br /></div><div>The large building at the top left is Terminal 4. A 9-level parking lot sits right on top of the terminal, so getting from your car to the concourse is as close as an elevator ride and walk around the corner. </div><div><br /></div><div> </div><div>The disadvantage of an airport located in the middle of town is the issue of noise. The flight paths follow the Salt River in each direction, but there are now lots of new buildings under the flight path around the Tempe Town Lake, which is a dammed up portion of the Salt River.</div><div><br /></div><div>This concludes my series of photos from central Phoenix. It is only few years old. There is a glass atrium that occupies the north half of the interior, which is the side of the building shown in this photo.<br /><div><br /></div><div>Sandra Day O'Connor is an Arizona native, growing up on a ranch and practicing law, serving as a state legislator, Superior Court Judge and Court of Appeals Judge in Phoenix. In additon to the new federal Courthouse, the law school at Arizona State University is also named for her.</div><div><br /></div><div>Although she has retired from the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice O'Connor remains very active in Arizona. It is an architectural masterpiece. It has a rather minimalist, industrial design, but is stunningly beautiful. It was also about half the price per square foot as the average library construction costs. <br /><div><br /></div><div>The east and west facade, on the left and right ends of this photo, are metal to reflect the sun. The north and south facades are glass, with sail-like shade structures that let light in but keep direct sun out. </div><div><br /></div><div>There are round skylights on the roof, and on the first day of spring and fall the sun passing directly overhead at noon sends shafts of light down onto pillars in the interior. Thank goodness this massive highway was placed below ground cutting across central Phoenix.</div><div><br /></div><div>Going farther down Central Avenue, on the right, just before the copper colored high rise, there is a grey mid-rise building with a tall antenna on top. That is the Westward Ho, which at one time was the tallest building between Texas and Los Angeles. It used to be a hotel, and is now a senior citizens home.</div><div><br /></div><div>The tall building on the right is Phoenix City Hall. The building with the widest facade in the center of the Photo is the headquarters of the Freeport McMoran mining company, which acquired Phelps Dodge Copper Co. several years ago. From its beginning in 1959, it has now grown to a collection of 18,000 works of art, with 285,000 square feet (26,500 sq. m.) of exhibition space. <div><br /></div><div>The building has been expanded several times during the last 20 years, and the Art Museum took over the space of what used to be the main Phoenix Library, which is the wing at the top of this photo.</div><div><br /></div><div>We have enjoyed very memorable special exhibitions that have been hosted at the museum, in addition to its regular collections. David and I are members, and we are also members of several of the museum's support groups for Latin American, Asian, and European art. </div><div><br /></div><div>As you may have gathered from my post yesterday and today, David and I are supporters of the arts in Phoenix and Scottsdale. David is the longest consecutively serving member of the Board of Directors of the Phoenix Symphony, now in his 5th 3-year term. Several years ago David and I hosted a reception at our house for the Boards of Directors of the Heard Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Symphony, Ballet, and Opera and several of the Phoenix City Council members who support the arts. The Heard has 40,000 items in its collection, displayed in 130,000 square feet (12,000 sq. m.) of space. <div><br /></div><div>We are members, and we enjoy going to the Heard's Indian Market each spring, with rivals Santa Fe as the premier exhibition and sale of Native American art. We have bought dozens of art works there over the years.</div><div><br /></div><div>Because we have been spoiled by the Heard's collection, when we went to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian on the Mall in Washington D.C. recently, we loved the architecture of the building, but we were very disappointed in the collection. When my husband was hospitalized here for about 4 days for some cardiac testing (he is fine) my brother visited him and said he felt like a salmon returning to his birthplace.</div><div><br /></div><div>For mid-century architecture, I think this design has help up well. The hospital is rather unusual inside, as there are not many straight corridors, as the rooms are arranged in circular pods. This is part of the view from my husband's office, as he works down the hall from me. His view is to the north, and this photo shows the Central Avenue business district.<br /><div><br /></div><div>The light rail tracks run down the middle of Central Avenue. The mountain in the distance is part of the North Mountain Preserve, a massive City of Phoenix park, with lots of desert hiking trails. </div><div><br /></div><div>The low white dome in the center of the photo is the Xavier Catholic Church. The low carmel colored building in front of it is Central High School. In other words, we have the equivalent of an empty Tucson within the Phoenix metro area. The likely explanation for this is that Arizona has made things so unpleasant for immigrants that many have left, often with the rest of their families also leaving, even if other family members are citizens.</div><div><br /></div><div>When the population drops, the sales tax revenues for local governments drop. And the empty houses hurt neighborhoods and property values.<br /><div><br /></div><div>This is part of the view that I look at from my desk in my office in Central Phoenix. This view is to the north west. For those of you who follow our good friend Sharon's <a href="http://phxdp.blogspot.com/">Phoenix Daily Photo</a> site, Sharon's house is in the center right of this photo, too far to see it individually. Camelback is about 10 miles (16 km) away. It rises 1,280 feet (390 m) above the valley floor.</div><div><br /></div><div>If you look closely, you can see how houses, or perhaps I should say mansions, crept up Camelback to take advantage of the views, before they stopped allowing building on the mountain to preserve it. </div><div><br /></div><div>The side of Camelback shown in this photo is in Phoenix. On the right is the Neiman Marcus store, also a part of Scottsdale Fashion Square, as the mall includes two enclosed bridges of shops that cross Camelback Road and Goldwater Boulevard.</div><div><br /></div><div>You cannot discern the distinctive shape of Camelback Mountain from this angle because you are looking at the back end of the camel. A few years ago the City allowed these tall condos in the heart of Scottsdale. People who live here love it, as there are lots of amenities and they can walk to probably 50 restaurants. My husband and I walk here for dinner in the evening sometimes from our house.<div><br /></div><div>The condos are part of the Scottsdale Waterfront Project, which combines residential towers with shops, restaurants, and offices. The Waterfront connects Scottsdale Fashion Square, which is across the street to the north, and downtown Scottsdale, which is across the canal to the south, as I showed yesterday. </div><div><br /><div>I think the City allowed the height as an incentive for the developer because of the benefit of developing and uniting the land between the mall and downtown. San Antonio learned how to use canals as an architectural feature 80 years ago. We do not have a lot of fences in Scottsdale, as most people have walls around their yards. This wall, however, also has a fence. There is a fence that holds back the river rock and simulates the waves of either the ocean or a river, under the fish.<br /><div><br /></div><div>This wall is about one mile (1.6 km) from our house. It decorates a wall along Goldwater Boulevard just south of Camelback, near Scottsdale Fashion Square. </div><div><br /></div><div>I like public art such as this. It makes the city more festive and interesting. Cacti don't have bolts and round screens. This is a cell phone tower. Rather than ugly cell phones, in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley they hide them in fake cacti and fake palm trees. They were installed by a contractor for AT &amp; T, but other cell phone networks are trying to negotiate use of the towers aso.<div><br /></div><div>I think this is a good idea. I drive by this cactus twice a day on my way to and from work. Why should people look at ugly mechanical and telecommunications equipment when a little decoration can make them attractive. Most people who drive by probably do not even realize that this is not a real cactus.</div><div><br /></div><div>The Paradise Valley Town Council is now having to deal with the problem of these cacti needing electrical meters. Some residents who live near the cacti complain that they don't want to have electrical meters visible on the cacti. I think they should just use solar panels to reduce the electricity usage to a point where they don't need to have meters. Upon close inspection, what look like thorns from a distance are not thorns at all, but are little painted dots. The skin of this cactus is not the green flesh of a saguaro, but is a painted cement or stucco. The paint is variable in color, with multiple shades of green, and a little gold accent. <br /><div><br /></div><div>The answer to why they would put a fake cactus on the side of the road near our house will be revealed tomorrow.</div><div><br /></div><div>There is a new problem that has arisen with these faux cacti. It turns out that they will need to have electrical meters installed on them. They were never intended to have electrical meters because they were supposed to be charged a uniform rate, but it turns out that they use more electricity than the rate structure allows for a flat charge. I sure looks like a saguaro, however, with vertical ribs. But there is something odd and unnatural about what looks like a blemish on this cactus. I will show a closer view after continuing this tease a little longer.<div><br /></div><div>There is a new and unforeseen problem with this and 41 other cacti just like it that have been installed in the Town of Paradise Valley. The problem is so important that the town government has mailed 3,600 notices to residents about two Town planning meetings being held on this problem. There was sculpture, as you see here, paintings, fine art photography, jewelry, and many other artists. <div><br /></div><div>Most of the booths seemed to be artists from out of state. They must have a circuit of art fairs at which they sell their creations.
